New Details Revealed About the Hummer EV Pickup

Excitement is building about the production and release of the first GMC Hummer EV Pickup, with Edition 1 models arriving in the fall of 2021. The first models are being manufactured at the freshly retooled Factory ZERO plant in Michigan and will be the first GM vehicles to utilize Ultium batteries. The Edition 1 will be built with 24 modules that will be double-stacked to house an incredible 200 kWh of power. With that power, the Edition 1 is expected to offer an estimated 350 miles of driving range, even though it weighs in at an astonishing 9,046 pounds. When it finally arrives, everyone will want to rush to their new truck dealership in Atlanta to get a glimpse of the first electric supertruck ever produced.
Numbers never before experienced in an off-road vehicle are being reported by GMC, with up to 1,000 horsepower available and torque measured at 11,500 lb-ft. That amount of power is impressive and certainly out-performs any other truck or off-road vehicle on the market, gas-powered or otherwise. The power is produced by three electric motors distributed across both axles, giving the Hummer EV true four-wheel drive.
Part of the allure of this new Hummer EV lies in its many technological capabilities. One such feature is the Watts to Freedom mode, which is a launch mode system. When Watts to Freedom mode is engaged, the vehicle lowers itself to reduce wind drag, sound effects play through the audio system accompanied by animation on the interior screens, and the driver’s seat will vibrate just before the Hummer EV Pickup launches from zero to 60 in three seconds. And this is only the beginning of what the Hummer EV Pickup can do.

Unique Exterior Features and Elements
Lightbar headlights that turn on as you approach the Hummer EV Pickup are unique in appearance, but they serve a dual purpose: the headlights glow blue while charging the Hummer EV. Much like a battery indicator on a cell phone, the light bar will indicate how much of the battery has charged while plugged in by lighting more of the bar as it gains power. When fully charged, the entire bar is lit. Other unique features integrated into the design include repeated letter H icons hidden within the headlights, taillights, and in several places within the interior. GMC also cleverly hides an American flag in the C pillar on the exterior, though it’s all black to blend with the design. There are more “Easter eggs,” as these hidden features are called, but it would ruin the experience to reveal them all.
The infinity roof with modular sky panels is completely removable to allow for open-air driving. Four glass panels inserted into a T-shaped roof bar easily come free and have their own storage in the powered front trunk, though even when in place, the roof creates an open view above and around the GMC Hummer EV pickup, far more open than a typical sunroof design. When 2022 models arrive for purchase, they will feature the Multipro tailgate that canbe configured in multiple positions for loading, hauling, and even rear bed access with steps, a design currently available in GM model trucks. The Hummer EV Pickup is expected to have a powered tonneau cover to slide over the 5-foot bed, though that length increases up to seven feet when the tailgate is lowered.
The incredible capability of the Hummer EV Pickup delivers superior off-road agility with four-wheel steering that allows the Hummer EV to “crabwalk” on a diagonal line for driving through tight spaces – a feature that is likely to be handy in the city for parking as well. The air suspension can lift the Hummer EV up to a maximum of 15.9 inches of ground clearance, an approach angle of 49.7 degrees, a breakover angle of 32.2 degrees, and a departure angle of 38.4 degrees. With such high numbers, the Hummer EV Pickup will have a truly impressive ability to conquer virtually any terrain even beyond that of its most capable off-road competitors. GMC has thought of almost everything for off-roading, even including an automatic tire pressure deflator for better grip on the trail and dual rear motors that act as a rear locking differential. Hitting the trail will be almost as futuristic as arriving on the moon.

Interior Space, Technology, and Design
The styling of the cabin in this GMC truck comes across as futuristic as well, with screens dominating the dash and center stack, but it’s also linear with straight lines throughout the interior. Every surface is box-shaped, including the center console between the two front seats, with crisp edges removing any thought of softness or curved reliefs. With lunar-themed colors will also come a few lunar design elements hidden in the cabin, a fun tribute to the exploration of the moon in the form of a few “Easter eggs” buyers can enjoy discovering. One of these features a moon boot print the size of Neil Armstrong’s foot, a detail you may find difficult to discover if you don’t know it’s there.
Operating the climate controls, driving modes, or settings for the infotainment is done with wide, generous switches in the center stack beneath the high-definition 13.4-inch screen, their toggles reminiscent of what might be found in a lunar module. Most off-road capable vehicles come with auxiliary access wiring to allow after-market adaptations like winches or exterior lighting, but the Hummer EV will incorporate this auxiliary feature into the infotainment screen. Buttons on the touchscreen can be programmed to whatever exterior adaptation you add for improved off-roading and ease of interior functionality. A particularly intelligent use of off-road driving modes is brake regeneration during rock crawling, when braking is generally done more than at any other time.
Rear seats have comfortable legroom for adults and offer hidden storage in the seatbacks with cube-shaped compartments accessed by tugging a strap to reveal space for small items you want to tuck out of sight. The rear window is one continuous piece of glass that can be lowered like typical side windows and offers unimpeded views to the rear, whether up or down. When you remove the roof, lowering the rear window fully opens the pickup to the outside, much like a convertible, but with roof bars that protect you in the event of a rollover. Both front and rear seats offer extra bolstering so passengers will have added security for the adventures ahead, and easy-to-clean flooring means you can take your adventures on foot without worrying about mud or sand coming back with you.
When Will the Hummer EV Pickup Be Available?
Edition 1, the Hummer’s top tier that incorporates all the available features, is scheduled for a fall 2021 release and will be the very first model to be produced for sale. Unfortunately, all the models being produced for the first release are spoken for, but more models are being prepped for production. The Edition 1 base pricing comes in at $112,595, but the trim level below that will be called the EV3X and will cost closer to $100,000. After that, the EV2X slots in at about $90,000, and the least expensive Hummer EV pickup will be the EV2 at approximately $80,000.
With the two upper-level trims, the Hummer EV pickup will be equipped with three motors to produce the mind-blowing capability GMC has been promoting, and the two lower-level trims are equipped with only two electric motors. This means performance will drop with the lesser trims, but it will still be a wildly powerful supertruck. Buyers can expect the EV3X model to be available in 2022, with the EV2X and EV2 trims arriving farther out on the timeline.
