Choosing the right GMC dealership is not always as easy as it may seem. Sure, you can start off like you would when shopping for anything else: sit down at your computer or whip out your phone and search “GMC dealer near me.” But what do you do after that, when a few thousand pages of results come up in response to your search?

That’s when it’s time to start narrowing down your choices and figure out not only what dealership is right, but also which ones are just wrong for what you need. Once you have settled on the vehicle you want (or at least have a general sense of what you’re looking for), then choosing the right dealership should be easy. But, in reality, you can end up wasting your time at a dealer that does not have what you want or need, or can’t work with you to get your new vehicle financed.

Fortunately, there are some ways to know whether you have chosen the right GMC dealer or not. Keep these things in mind when you’re looking for a dealership and visiting a lot before making a purchase. You can use this as a sort of mini-checklist that you run through mentally to double-check that you’ve made the right choice and picked the GMC dealer near you that will meet all your needs.

1. The Website is Easy to Use and Navigate

Whether you are shopping online or planning on visiting a dealership to buy a vehicle in person, you should still start by searching online for the best GMC dealer near you and go from there. You can learn a lot about a business, including a car dealership, from its website. After all, the website is one of the first impressions a business makes on you, so it should be a good one.

If the website for a GMC dealer near you is easy to use and simple to navigate, then that’s a good sign. It means the dealership understands the importance of making the car-buying process as streamlined and simple as possible – something we can all appreciate. You should be able to find a lot of information on the dealer’s website that can make buying a car a lot easier; use this information to your advantage to save you time before you actually go there in person.

2. The Employees are Easy to Reach

One of the things you should be able to find on a dealer’s website is information about how to contact the people who work there. This includes two things: hours of operation and service, and phone numbers for each department. You probably won’t find numbers to reach certain people individually, and that’s fine, but you should be able to find numbers to easily call particular departments and know when you can reach someone there.

Right now, you might have some general questions, but later – particularly after you have made a purchase – questions you have can be very important. You want to make sure it is easy to reach the people who work at the GMC dealership near you within your schedule and at easy-to-find phone numbers. A good dealership wants you to reach out to them with questions or concerns and should welcome your feedback and queries.

3. The Inventory is Easy to View

This is the second thing you should look for on a dealership’s website: the inventory of what they have in stock. There are a few reasons to check out the inventory for any GMC dealer near you that you are interested in. Perhaps most obviously, if you have a certain model or trim that you are interested in, then you can see if they have that in stock already so that you can drive away in it the same day you visit.

In general, you want to see a nice, large inventory that tells you they have a lot of vehicles, do a lot of business, and have been around awhile. Keep in mind that inventory on used models can fluctuate quite a bit, but you should still be able to look at some of what they have. This online inventory can also be used once you visit the dealership to verify that they have as many vehicles as they claim (though keep in mind they might have more than one lot).

4. They Have the Financing Options You Need

Finally, the website of a GMC dealer near you should clearly indicate at least some of the financing options they have available. You might be able to use tools on the site to get a sense of the trade-in value of your vehicle or see what kind of financing you might pre-qualify for. All of these tools help you with car-shopping, so you have a sense of what your budget will allow for and what you should expect when you visit.

If the dealership seems to try to hide any thought of auto financing, then that’s a warning sign. Financing is just part of buying a car, truck, or SUV, so there’s no reason to avoid it. You want to see that they are upfront about it and ready to work with you as best they can to make sure you get the kind of financing that is right for you.

5. The Dealership is Clean and Inviting

Once you actually go to a GMC dealer near you, then this is the first thing you should pay attention to. Just as the dealer’s website is the first impression they make on you online, the first impression their lot makes should also be a positive one. The lot should be clean and well-lit, and generally inviting to you as a customer.

If the dealership is dark or dirty, that’s a huge red flag, and you should just leave immediately. Like any other business, the retail location reflects the values and work ethic of the people who own it and work there. A professional atmosphere is the very least you should expect from a dealership that wants your business.

6. The Employees are Friendly and Knowledgeable

When you talk to employees, particularly salespeople, they should be friendly, honest, and knowledgeable. Everyone has a bad day now and then, but in general, the atmosphere around the employees should be a positive one. If everyone looks depressed and miserable, that means something is very wrong with the owners and/or management – so get out of there and find a GMC dealer near you that treats its employees well.

When you talk to salespeople, they should know about the vehicles they sell and be able to give you answers to your questions. If they don’t know an answer, then they should be able to find it and provide you with accurate information. Everything they tell needs to be honest and present you with the information you need to make an educated purchase.

7. It Just “Feels Right”

This isn’t as clear as something like a dirty dealership or clearly deceptive salespeople, but it is no less important. When you are going through the car-buying process, it should just feel right to you. The moment you feel like you are being pressured into a vehicle you don’t want or a financing plan you won’t be able to keep up with, then you should cancel everything and walk away.

At the end of the day, buying a new vehicle is all about you and your experience: making sure you get the right car, truck, or SUV for your needs. When it all feels right, you’ll know it, and the experience will be a positive one. If you don’t feel that, then find another GMC dealer near you that does meet your needs.
