Trying to decide between the 2019 Buick Encore vs 2019 Honda HR-V? Although both of these vehicles are in the same class, they are exceptionally different. While the 2019 Buick Encore focuses on offering a luxury style vehicle, the 2019 Honda HR-V is more about offering the essentials at a low price. For this reason, these two SUVs vary greatly in terms of standard features and they are close contenders in terms of performance and safety. So, which vehicle best suits your needs?

The 2019 Buick Encore is considered to be a luxury vehicle by many drivers and critics. It features an upscale interior and advanced standard entertainment suite. Drivers investing in the base model can enjoy incredible features like an 8-inch touchscreen display, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a 4G LTE WiFi hotspot. Meanwhile, the Encore is also powerful, safe, and reliable.

The 2019 Honda HR-V offers a very basic set of standard features, including a 5-inch audio display and Bluetooth. The lack of a touchscreen display on its base model is surprising to many drivers, as this has become considered a common standard featured among most manufacturers. However, the 2019 Honda HR-V does offer a nice set of standard and available driver assist features and is one of the most efficient vehicles in its class.

Deciding between these two vehicles will ultimately come down to your personal preferences and budget. To determine whether the 2019 Buick Encore or 2019 Honda HR-V is right for you, it’s important to take a close look at these vehicles side by side in terms of performance, entertainment, and safety.

  • Performance

A black 2019 Buick Encore is driving away from a city blurred out in the background.

Drivers interested in a vehicle from the subcompact SUV class are expecting efficiency, maneuverability, and responsive handling. Thankfully, both the 2019 Buick Encore and 2019 Honda HR-V offer a high level of performance in the subcompact SUV class, yet the Encore takes the win with smoother handling and more power.

    2019 Buick Encore

The 2019 Buick Encore comes with a turbocharged 1.4L 4-cylinder engine, as well as a stronger version of this engine on its Sport Touring and Essence trim levels. With its more powerful 1.4L 4-cylinder engine, the 2019 Buick Encore is able to produce up to 153 hp. Both versions of the engine are paired with a 6-speed automatic engine. The Encore comes standard in front-wheel-drive but is available in all-wheel drive upon upgrade. In terms of efficiency, the 2019 Buick Encore earns up to 27 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway, which is above average for its class. Critics note that the Encore offers a smooth and responsive ride with exceptional maneuverability and quicker acceleration than its contenders. Overall, the 2019 Buick Encore is a well-rounded vehicle and exceeds the goals of the subcompact SUV class.

    2019 Honda HR-V

The 2019 Honda HR-V comes standard with a 1.8L 4-cylinder engine paired with a CVT. This configuration is only capable of producing up to 141 hp. Critics note that the HR-V has difficulty accelerating quickly, which worsens when the vehicle is full of passengers. Like the Encore, the 2019 Honda HR-V is available in both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive and offers high-efficiency ratings at up to 28 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway. These numbers are higher than the Encore’s, however, only by 1 mpg in the city and on the highway. Drivers investing in the all-wheel-drive version of the HR-V will see the fuel economy rating drop to about 27 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway. While the 2019 Honda HR-V offers above average performance in the subcompact SUV class, the 2019 Buick Encore has the edge with more power, better handling, and nearly identical fuel economy ratings.

  • Entertainment

An entertainment feature for charging electronics is shown in the 2019 Buick Encore. The entertainment in the Encore wins when comparing the 2019 Buick Encore vs 2019 Honda HR-V.

When it comes to entertainment, the 2019 Buick Encore is the clear overall winner. The Encore offers an incredible list of advanced standard entertainment features onboard its base model, while the HR-V offers only a few basic features with a lackluster selection of available features.

    2019 Buick Encore

The 2019 Buick Encore comes standard with one of the largest entertainment suites available in the subcompact SUV class. On its base model, drivers can enjoy features like an 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, dual USB ports, a 4G LTE WiFi hotspot, satellite radio, Bluetooth, and a 6-speaker sound system. While this is more than enough to keep all of your passengers entertained and connected, the 2019 Buick Encore also offers an impressive list of available features including a 7-speaker Bose premium sound system and navigation. For the tech-savvy driver, the 2019 Buick Encore is the ideal vehicle in the subcompact SUV class, requiring no upgrades to experience the latest entertainment technology on the market. This is further enhanced by the Encore’s upscale interior, which features high-quality materials and a modern design.

    2019 Honda HR-V

The 2019 Honda HR-V offers very little on its base trim level, especially when compared to nearly any other vehicle in its class. The only standard entertainment features you’ll find are a 5-inch audio display (which does not offer touch screen capabilities), one USB port, and Bluetooth. Other than that, you’ll have to upgrade to a higher trim level to experience the features that are usually standard on competing vehicles. Next to the 2019 Buick Encore, the 2019 Honda HR-V seems exceptionally bare of entertainment technology. While the HR-V offers plenty of available features like a 7-inch touchscreen display, one more USB port, navigation, and satellite radio, these options are simply underwhelming. The Honda HR-V did add optional Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for the first time on its 2019 model, so Honda drivers can finally take advantage of this must-have connectivity feature. If you’re looking for an intuitive and included entertainment suite, you’ll want to opt for the 2019 Buick Encore over the 2019 Honda HR-V.

  • Safety

A blue 2019 Buick Encore on a busy city street

It’s a close call between the 2019 Buick Encore and 2019 Honda HR-V in the category of safety. Both vehicles performed very well during crash test and safety ratings with the IIHS and NHTSA, but the Encore earned a higher reliability rating with J.D. Power and offers significantly more warranty coverage.

    2019 Buick Encore

On the base model of the 2019 Buick Encore drivers will find a standard rearview camera, however higher trim levels offer even more advanced safety features. Available driver assist features on the 2019 Buick Encore include both front and rear parking sensors, rear cross traffic alert, blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning, and forward collision warning. When it came to reliability ratings, the 2019 Buick Encore earned a score of 4.5 out 5, which is incredibly high compared to other subcompact SUVs. Drivers investing in a new Encore can also enjoy a 4-year/50,000-mile warranty, as well as a 6-year/70,000-mile powertrain warranty. This warranty offers more coverage than nearly every other vehicle in its class, as well as many vehicles among other classes. Overall, the 2019 Buick Encore is safe, reliable, and offers coverage for many years to come.

    2019 Honda HR-V

The 2019 Honda HR-V earned a 5-star overall rating from the NHTSA for its performance in various crash test categories. Like the Encore, the new HR-V comes standard with a rearview camera and offers more advanced safety features among its higher trim levels. These available safety features include lane departure warning, lane keep assist, forward collision warning, and adaptive cruise control, which all fall under the Honda Sensing package. However, the 2019 Honda HR-V scored a 3 out of 5 points in reliability from J.D. Power and offers a basic 3-year/36,000-mile warranty and 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty. Although the 2019 Honda HR-V is an incredibly safe vehicle, you’ll have more coverage and likely a longer lasting vehicle with the 2019 Buick Encore.
