The Four Faces of the GMC Yukon

The GMC Yukon is a highly capable and luxurious full-size SUV. With a powerful V8 engine, rugged construction, and a host of features designed to provide a comfortable driving experience, the GMC Yukon has few peers. However, choosing the right variant of this iconic SUV can be challenging because it is almost four different SUVs wearing the same name. The GMC Yukon, GMC Yukon XL, and the Denali trims of those two vehicles have enough differences that they could easily be marketed as different vehicles. So if you have been looking through auto sales brochures and are still left wondering “what is the difference between the GMC Yukon and the Yukon XL?” or “what is the difference between the GMC Yukon and a Yukon Denali?” then you have come to the right place.

Put simply, the difference between the GMC Yukon and the GMC Yukon XL is their size. The XL is the extended version of the GMC Yukon and offers far more passenger and cargo space than the base SUV. As for the Denali, it is the most luxurious version of the GMC Yukon and GMC Yukon XL, and it also comes with some mechanical differences such as a more powerful engine. But this is just the basic explanation, so keep reading, because we at Rick Hendrick GMC Duluth in Duluth, GA, took a deep dive into the significant differences between the four major variants of GMC’s flagship SUV.

Yukon vs Yukon XL

A popular auto sale, a black 2021 GMC Yukon Denali, is driving on a snowy mountain road.

When looking at automobiles for sale, the most important thing is to get a large enough vehicle for your needs. And the standard GMC Yukon is undoubtedly a large vehicle. But despite its size and capability, it actually has a relatively limited third row and may be better thought of as a “2 plus 1” row vehicle rather than a full three-row SUV. While the third seats are certainly usable, they are not particularly comfortable for adults and significantly reduce the available cargo space.

Drivers seeking a full-time three-row SUV are better off upgrading to the GMC Yukon XL. Despite sharing a name, the Yukon XL is significantly larger than the Yukon and will have no problem fitting up to eight passengers as well as all of their baggage. However, even though it is a much larger vehicle, the GMC Yukon XL shares the same platform, powertrain, and features as the GMC Yukon. So if you are expecting greater performance or luxury from the larger version, you will be disappointed. Instead, those attributes are gained by upgrading to the Denali trim, but we will get to that later.

To put the differences between the latest 2021 GMC Yukon and 2021 GMC Yukon XL into hard numbers, the larger vehicle measures some 15 inches longer in terms of overall length and 13 inches longer in terms of wheelbase. And the 2021 models are actually closer in size than the outgoing 2020 models, which have an over 20-inch difference in overall length. Needless to say, the significant change in exterior dimensions between the GMC Yukon and the Yukon XL has a large effect on the interior dimensions and gives the larger variant a noticeably roomier cabin with more room for passengers and cargo.

While the first and second-row seats are dimensionally identical across the two 2021 models, the third-row passengers in the 2021 Yukon XL have 36.7 inches of legroom while the back seats in the 2021 Yukon have 34.9 inches of legroom. Perhaps more importantly, the smaller vehicle only has 25.5 cu.ft. of cargo space behind its third-row while the larger variant offers much more space at 41.5 cu.ft. This latter point means that you can not only comfortably fit eight passengers in a GMC Yukon XL, you can also fit all the stuff that they want to bring with them. And when you are not carrying passengers and can fold down the rear seats, the 2021 Yukon XL can fit up to 144.7 cu.ft. of cargo space instead of the 122.9 cu.ft. of the 2021 Yukon.

If you are looking at the outgoing 2020 model year versions of these two vehicles, the difference will be even more dramatic. The most significant improvement of the 2021 model year was the introduction of an independent rear suspension that allowed the designers to increase the passenger and cargo space significantly. Without this improvement, the 2020 Yukon has a wholly inadequate 24.8 inches of third-row legroom and just 15.3 cu.ft. of cargo space when the seats are all in place, while the 2020 Yukon XL has an acceptable 34.5 inches of back seat legroom and 39.3 cu.ft. of standard cargo space.

So if passenger and cargo space are your priorities, then the GMC Yukon XL is definitely the way to go, and you should probably be looking at the new 2021 model even if there are auto sales on the older version. However, if a two-row SUV is mostly fine for your purpose, then the standard GMC Yukon of either generation will provide slightly better performance and fuel economy as well as a lower price tag.

Climbing Denali

A red 2021 GMC Yukon XL Denali is shown from the side on a snowy mountain.

Every vehicle built by GMC also has a Denali variant, which is somewhere between a top trim and a separate luxury model. Not only do the Denali versions of GMC’s base models come with far more premium features and materials, but they often have mechanical upgrades as well. In the case of the GMC Yukon and Yukon XL, that includes a significantly larger and more powerful V8 engine. However, the Denali versions are still dimensionally identical to the base models. Further, there are again no equipment or performance differences between the Yukon Denali and the Yukon XL Denali.

The standard variants of both the new 2021 Yukon and the outgoing 2020 Yukon are equipped with a 5.3L V8 engine that delivers 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque. This is already a capable power plant and will move even the larger Yukon XL along at a good pace. However, if more power is desired, then the Denali versions of these vehicles come with a standard 6.2L V8 that provides an impressive 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. With this engine, the Yukon Denali will never have any issues with climbing hills or passing at speed, even when it is fully loaded or towing a trailer.

And although both the standard and Denali versions of the 2021 models come with the same modern ten-speed automatic transmission, for the 2020 models, the Denali trim also brought the upgrade from an older six-speed automatic to the ten-speed unit found in the current SUVs. Further, the Denali brings standard magnetic ride control suspension for unparalleled ride quality while the standard versions have a traditional suspension setup. Altogether, these mechanical changes make the Yukon Denali feel and handle like an entirely different vehicle from the normal GMC Yukon.

But on top of the mechanical differences, the Denali Line brings a wealth of features and technology. While the base 2021 GMC Yukon has the standard array of driver assistance technologies from automatic braking to lane change assist, for enhanced driver awareness and safety, the 2021 Yukon Denali also comes standard with a 15 inch heads up display and 360-degree camera views. The infotainment package in the luxury version is also enhanced with the upgrade to a standard fourteen-speaker Bose Centerpoint surround sound system and SiriusXM NavTraffic.

And finally, the interior of the 2021 Yukon Denali is filled with additional standard equipment ranging from a power-adjustable steering column and power-folding rear seats to a heated steering wheel and perforated leather seating. All of which are either optional or outright unavailable on the base version of the 2021 GMC Yukon. Together, these features and the enhanced drivetrain make the Yukon Denali not only a far more comfortable vehicle, but they also make it an auto sales bargain compared to what it would cost to add similar features to the standard GMC Yukon.

A Final Look

The differences among the Yukon, Yukon XL, Yukon Denali, and Yukon XL Denali are great. And there are even some serious differences between the 2020 model year and the 2021 model year. What does this mean for you as a driver, though? It means that when you are shopping for a GMC Yukon, you are sure to find one that fits your needs. The four faces of the Yukon are all fantastic; it’s up to you to figure out which is best for you.
