Our 10 Favorite Used SUVs

Choosing a used model rather than a brand-new vehicle is a great way to save money. Not only will a used vehicle cost less upfront, but you will also avoid a lot of depreciation on the car, truck, or SUV. But when you start looking at used SUVs for sale, you will quickly discover that you have a ton of options available to you, and the massive selection can get a bit overwhelming. Narrowing down all of your possible options is not always an easy task, and it often helps to have someone by your side to answer your questions and make sure you get just the right vehicle with everything you need.

Today, we thought it would be helpful to go through ten of our favorite models when it comes to used SUVs for sale. We talked to just about everyone here at Rick Hendrick Buick GMC Duluth to see which models people preferred, and some specific ones definitely became the clear favorites. Originally, this was going to be a shorter list, but we realized that limiting it to ten would be enough of a challenge, so it grew a bit beyond what we had planned. Nevertheless, you’ll still find this helpful to point you in the right direction when you’re shopping. Presented here, in no particular order, are our ten favorite used SUVs for sale.

#1 – Buick Encore

First released for the 2013 model year, the Buick Encore is a subcompact crossover SUV that has been quite popular throughout the entirety of its production run. If you want the performance and functionality of an SUV without worrying about fitting it in your driveway or paying high gas bills, then this is a great option due to its small size. It’s worth noting that there was an update to the Encore in 2017, so look for models from that year or later to get the most recent features. We should also mention that the Encore is not designed for towing, so keep that in mind if you’re interested in hauling a trailer or camper behind you.

#2 – GMC Yukon

Introduced for the 1992 model year, the GMC Yukon has been around for quite a while and is an incredibly popular full-size SUV. If you look at a subcompact model like the Buick Encore and see that it’s not nearly large enough for what you want, then the Yukon is a fantastic option. There have been numerous generations available throughout the years: the most recent one launched in 2015 with an impressive redesign. So look for models from this time period to get the most up-to-date options and features.

#3 – Chevy Tahoe

If you like the style and size of the GMC Yukon, but you don’t need all of the luxury and technology features that it has to offer, then you should consider the Chevy Tahoe. This SUV is built on the same platform as the Yukon, so it is very similar to it. GMC is typically a bit more high-end in terms of features, so the Tahoe is usually a bit cheaper than a Yukon from the same year. But for performance and functionality, the Tahoe is just as impressive.

#4 – GMC Yukon XL

For something even larger than the impressive GMC Yukon, then you should take a look at the GMC Yukon XL, which has many of the same design features as the standard Yukon but with an extended length. That makes this model quite a bit larger, giving you much more interior space for passengers and cargo alike. Its larger size means it can cost more, but if you like the Yukon and want more size, the Yukon XL is the way to go.

#5 – Chevy Suburban

Just as the Chevy Tahoe is a great alternative to a used GMC Yukon, so too is the Chevy Suburban a fantastic choice if you like the Yukon XL but don’t quite need what GMC has to offer. The Chevy Suburban is built on the same larger platform as the Yukon XL and is a longer option than the Chevy Tahoe, but with fantastic features throughout. All four of these SUVs were updated to be larger for the 2021 model year, so look for the latest used models to give you even more space inside.

#6 – GMC Terrain

Our other favorite option from GMC is the Terrain, which was originally a midsize crossover SUV when introduced for the 2010 model year, though it was redesigned for 2018 as a compact model. If you’re interested in one of the larger, first-generation models, then keep in mind that there was a mid-cycle refresh for the 2016 model year, so look for models from 2016 and 2017 for the latest features. Second-generation models starting in 2018 are a bit smaller overall, so consider that when looking at different used SUVs for sale.

#7 – Chevy Trax

If you like the subcompact size of a used Buick Encore, but you don’t quite need the kinds of features typically found in a luxury vehicle, then consider the Chevy Trax. This is a subcompact crossover built on the same platform as the Encore, so it has the same great design and performance, but you can often find it at a lower price. First released for the 2015 model year, the Trax hasn’t been around very long, but it received an update and facelift for 2017, so keep that in mind when considering various used SUVs for sale.

#8 – Nissan Rogue

One of our favorite options from overseas, the Nissan Rogue is a compact crossover SUV – but while Nissan is a Japanese company, the Rogue is actually built right here in the US at a plant in Tennessee. First released for the 2008 model year, the Rogue was pretty successful right away and has been a top seller for the last decade. This means there are a lot of them out there, so you can pretty easily find a Rogue in great condition when looking at used SUVs for sale. A second generation launched for the 2014 model year, so look for models from that year or later if you want updated features and design.

#9 – Jeep Grand Cherokee

First released for the 1993 model year, the Jeep Grand Cherokee has been around quite a long time and is one of the most popular midsize SUVs on the road. The Grand Cherokee combines luxury, power, and performance for a unique driving experience. The fourth-generation launched in 2011 and dominates the used market, but you can still find older models if you want an even more affordable option. Look for a Trailhawk model for amazing off-road capability, or opt for an SRT or Trackhawk trim if you want a performance-focused SUV.

#10 – Lincoln Navigator

If luxury is your main interest, then the Lincoln Navigator is a fantastic option. This is a full-size luxury SUV that shares a platform with the popular Ford Expedition. First released for the 1998 model year, the Navigator has been on the road for a long time and has had numerous generations during its run. The most recent generation started with the 2018 model year, so you can find quite a few of them when looking at used SUVs for sale. That makes it easy to get the latest features and technology inside a sophisticated and luxurious ride.
