Five of Our Favorite Used SUVs for Towing

When looking at different SUVs that are great for towing, there are a lot of factors to consider before making a choice. While maximum towing capacity is of the utmost importance, of course, there are other things that we need to keep in mind. For example, even if you’re looking at used SUVs for sale with towing as your priority, you should still look for a spacious and comfortable interior with great tech features. You also want to be sure it can keep you and your loved ones safe while you’re on the road, especially when towing a trailer or camper behind you.
So even if the towing potential of an SUV is your first consideration, you need to still look beyond that and see what else it has available. Figuring out all of those factors can be a lot of work, however, which is why it helps to have a knowledgeable person by your side to help you keep track of it all and make sure you get exactly what you need. Perhaps a knowledgeable person like one of our friendly sales people here at Rick Hendrick Buick GMC Duluth, for example.
Because we’re happy to answer all of your questions and help you find the perfect used SUV for towing, let’s take a look now at some of the best options out there.
#1 – GMC Yukon
The GMC Yukon is a full-size SUV and definitely one of the best used SUVs for sale when it comes to towing. Not only has it provided tremendous towing potential for years now, but it also has a fantastic selection of interior features and safety features available. That means that any used Yukon you find will be a great vehicle––though if you can get your hands on a GMC Yukon Denali, then you are really in for a treat. In fact, the Denali is your best option for towing since it comes with a more powerful engine than other trims.
Here are the maximum towing capacities for several different model years:
- 2014 Yukon XL – Up to 8,100 lbs
- 2014 Yukon – Up to 8,500 lbs
- 2017 Yukon XL – Up to 8,300 lbs
- 2017 Yukon – Up to 8,500 lbs
Even though 2014 was the third generation for the Yukon and 2017 was the fourth generation, you can clearly see just how much towing potential it has to offer. When properly equipped, the Yukon is one of the best used SUVs for sale that you’ll find for hauling cargo behind you. Whether you have a boat or a trailer you need to load up for work, the GMC Yukon is ready to handle it.

#2 – Chevy Tahoe
Since the GMC Yukon and the Chevy Tahoe are built on the same platform, it should come as no surprise that we put the Tahoe right up there with the Yukon among our favorite used SUVs for sale to handle towing for you. In terms of practical performance, the Tahoe can pretty much handle anything that the Yukon can, which you will see in a moment when we look at maximum towing capacities for them. The Tahoe doesn’t have an XL version available (check out the Suburban below), but for towing performance, it works just as well.
Here are the maximum towing capacities for a couple of model years:
- 2014 Chevy Tahoe – Up to 8,500 lbs
- 2017 Chevy Tahoe – Up to 8,500 lbs
As you can see, the maximum towing with the Tahoe is unchanged from 2014 to 2017, even though those years represent two different generations for the Tahoe. That should tell you the kind of power you can get with a used Chevy Tahoe. In general, GMC is regarded as offering greater comfort and tech features than Chevy, which means you might be able to find more sophistication with the GMC Yukon, but the Chevy Tahoe might be more budget-friendly.
#3 – Buick Enclave
While the GMC Yukon and Chevy Tahoe were clearly designed with towing in mind, the Buick Enclave seems to have it as more of a secondary consideration. That doesn’t mean the Enclave isn’t great for towing––it certainly is––only that it doesn’t offer as much towing potential as those other two. A lot of Enclave models are a bit smaller than the Tahoe and Yukon, however, which means it’s a great choice if those other options are larger than what you really want. That being said, you can still get seating for up to eight people when properly equipped.
Here are the maximum towing capacities for a couple of model years:
- 2014 Buick Enclave – Up to 4,500 lbs
- 2018 Buick Enclave – Up to 5,000 lbs
The 2014 model was part of the first generation for the Enclave, while 2018 is within the current, second generation, which shows you that Buick has actually improved upon the Enclave’s towing performance. While 500 lbs might not be a huge difference, it does indicate that Buick understands the Enclave can be a great choice for towing.
#4 – Chevy Suburban

The Chevy Suburban is to the GMC Yukon XL as the Chevy Tahoe is to the standard GMC Yukon, which means it’s built on the same platform as the Yukon XL and shares its larger size. As a massive, full-size SUV, the Suburban has plenty of power to get a lot of towing done and gives you excellent interior room for passengers and cargo alike. With great towing performance and innovative features inside and out, it should come as no surprise that the Suburban is one of our favorite used SUVs for towing.
Here are the maximum towing capacities for a couple of model years:
- 2014 Chevy Suburban – Up to 8,100 lbs
- 2017 Chevy Suburban – Up to 8,300 lbs
As you can see, these essentially line up with the GMC Yukon XL, so if you like what you see with the Yukon XL, then this is an excellent second option. By recognizing the fantastic towing power of these vehicles, you can see that you’re free to choose among the different Yukon, Suburban, and Tahoe models to find the features you really want and get the towing you need.
#5 – GMC Acadia
Finally, we come to another of our favorite GMC offerings when looking at used SUVs for sale that can handle towing. The GMC Acadia is a smaller model than the Yukon and is more in line with a standard full-size or midsize SUV, depending on what generation you look at. Sharing a platform with the Buick Enclave, it is very similar in size, yet offers greater potential towing than the Buick SUV.
Here are the maximum towing capacities for a few models:
- 2014 GMC Acadia: Up to 5,200 lbs
- 2017 GMC Acadia: Up to 4,000 lbs
- 2017 GMC Acadia Unlimited: Up to 5,500 lbs
As you can see, a 2014 model from the Acadia’s first generation offers up to 5,200 lbs of towing, more than the same year’s Enclave. With the second generation, in 2017, two models were available; while the standard Acadia falls short of the Buick Enclave, the Acadia Limited, which is a holdover version of the first-generation model, comes out on top.
