Facing Off at the Pump: Diesel vs Gasoline

Any visit to your local gas station might leave you guessing why anyone would shop for diesel trucks for sale instead of their seemingly more affordable gas-powered counterparts. However, there’s more to a diesel truck than what the price at the pump tells us. Though diesel might be more expensive, how does the initial cost to fill the tank compare to a diesel engine’s heightened efficiency, capability, and longevity?

 

Recognizing the advantages of a diesel engine requires looking closer at how engines work on the most basic level. This gives us a better understanding of how a diesel engine operates more efficiently and why diesel trucks are longer-lasting and easier to maintain. From there, the advantages are plentiful, as you’ll soon discover.

A Diesel Engine at Work: Intake, Compression, Power, Exhaust

Every modern truck engine relies on a four-step process: intake, compression, power, and exhaust. However, diesel and gasoline engines differentiate themselves throughout the process in several unique ways. For example, the intake process on a diesel engine brings air into a chamber, but a gas-powered engine brings both air and fuel. Both engines compress the air into a smaller pocket to start the ignition process, but how they ignite looks vastly different.

 

A gasoline engine relies on a spark plug to ignite the mixture of air and fuel, push down the piston, and deliver horsepower. In contrast, a diesel engine doesn’t have a spark plug. The pocket of air becomes so hot as the piston approaches the top of the compression stroke that the diesel fuel ignites as soon as it is injected into the cylinder. From there, diesel and gasoline engines move to the exhaust stage, relying on the force of the pistons to expel fumes through the valves and out of the cylinder.

Advantage #1: Diesel Engines Are More Efficient

Diesel engines are notably more efficient than their gas-powered counterparts, which makes up for the higher price of diesel at the pump since you can travel further on a single tank of fuel. But why is this the case? It comes back to how the diesel engine operates.

Higher Compression

As we mentioned, diesel engines rely on the heat of compression to ignite the fuel and generate power. This means they can use much higher compression than a gasoline engine. If a gasoline engine tried to achieve the same amount of compression, the fuel-air mixture would spontaneously combust before the spark plug fires, which could damage or even destroy the engine. Why is this important? Think of the engine as a powerful spring––the more you compress the spring, the more energy you get when you release it. The higher compression ratio makes the diesel engine more efficient and powerful than a gasoline engine because it uses more of the available energy.

No Throttle Body

Along with a higher compression ratio, diesel engines are also more efficient and powerful because many aren’t regulated with a throttle body. Why is this significant? When you engage the accelerator pedal, a gasoline engine opens the throttle body, allowing more air into the engine as the injectors deliver more fuel. As a result, the air-to-fuel ratio remains low, restricting how much power a gasoline engine can provide and how efficiently it can operate. In contrast, a diesel engine doesn’t need to regulate the amount of air. Instead, engaging the accelerator pedal tells the injectors to deliver more fuel, creating more power based on the amount of fuel injected. As a result, diesel engines produce more power without excessive fuel consumption.

Advantage #2: Diesel Engines Are Longer-Lasting

How often have you heard of a gas-powered truck logging over 300,000 miles without breaking a sweat? Diesel engines are renowned for their longevity, making their higher initial cost a worthwhile investment. The longevity of a diesel engine is a direct reflection of its more durable design, a requirement for it to withstand the higher compression ratio during the ignition cycle. Likewise, the diesel fuel itself offers many benefits, acting as an oil that lubricates and cleans the engine as it operates. This multipurpose approach starkly contrasts gasoline, which naturally dissolves oil and causes increased wear and tear.

Advantage #3: Diesel Engines Are Easier to Maintain

Think about a diesel engine’s four-stroke process and its simpler approach than a gas-powered engine. A diesel engine doesn’t rely on a spark plug or coil packs, and many don’t require a throttle body. As a result, the process is more straightforward, and the engine design is less complex. With fewer components and a more rugged build, a diesel engine doesn’t require ignition tune-ups like its gas-powered siblings. Instead, routine maintenance like oil and filter changes are as complex as it gets and can extend the life of your diesel engine to hundreds of thousands of miles.

Advantage #4: Diesel Engines Have More Torque

One of the most significant advantages of driving a diesel truck is knowing it can easily tow heavy loads. This capability is because of a diesel engine’s ability to produce more torque at lower RPM. While horsepower often steals the spotlight, a higher torque rating makes for a more engaging and capable engine. We see this firsthand with a diesel powertrain.

Combustion Rate

Diesel engines produce more torque than their gas-powered rivals for several reasons. First, the higher compression ratio of a diesel engine and its use of compression ignition naturally generate more torque. Because ignition occurs at the absolute top of the stroke, maximum power is generated and instantly applied to the pistons. In contrast, gasoline engines have ignition when the piston is past the top of its compression stroke, leading to reduced power.

Stroke Length

Gasoline engines also tend to have a larger bore but a shorter piston stroke––the distance the piston travels as it compresses the air and fuel mixture during combustion. In contrast, a diesel engine has a shorter bore but a much longer stroke. As a result, the longer stroke gives the fuel more time to push the pistons down, resulting in greater force and a longer distance that directly contributes to higher amounts of torque.

Putting Your Money to Work: Investing in a Diesel Truck

Investing in a diesel truck is a great way to put your money to work if you want to reap the benefits of a durable and capable workhorse. Diesel engines are rugged by design, contributing to their longevity and success at logging hundreds of thousands of miles with nothing more than routine maintenance. They’re also incredibly capable workhorses that rely on high torque output to generate low-end power and haul heavy loads without breaking a sweat. More importantly, this capability and performance don’t come at the cost of efficiency, with diesel trucks requiring less frequent stops for fuel than their gas-powered rivals.

 

These advantages give you plenty of reasons to invest in a diesel truck, but they don’t cover the scope of a four-wheeled diesel powerhouse. Modern innovations in the industry mean diesel engines are quieter, more capable, and longer lasting than ever before. These advancements make diesel trucks incredibly valuable, allowing you to reap the rewards whether you invest in a new model with the latest features or a used model that’s logged its fair share of highway miles and is ready for more.
