Purchasing a truck is a big decision, but if you already know you want to go with the premium quality of a GMC, you may want to consider taking the route of buying a pre-owned model. A Certified Pre-Owned GMC Sierra 1500 has much of the warranty backing of a new model without the hefty price tag. Buying certified pre-owned (CPO) means you can own a luxurious, capable truck for a fraction of the price of a new vehicle, and you get a lot of exciting features you won’t find when you buy a used GMC outside of the CPO program. So, what are the benefits of a CPO? Let’s look at what you get for your money.

Benefits of GMC Certified Pre-Owned Truck

GMC offers a comprehensive warranty, a clean title, and generous assistance for anything you need after you purchase, starting with the condition of every certified pre-owned vehicle. Only models six years old or newer can be sold as Certified Pre-Owned, and they must have less than 75,000 miles on the odometer to qualify. A vehicle history is run to ensure the model has a clean bill of health for the next owner, and then every GMC must pass a rigorous inspection to be included in the program. Once the inspection is complete, the vehicle gets any necessary repairs and maintenance and receives a full detailing.

GMC trucks like the Sierra 1500 can be any model year or trim within the six-year time frame, and once it passes inspection and gets reconditioned, a GMC CPO will also come with certain benefits. Two warranties backed by GMC include a six-year or 100,000-mile Powertrain Limited Warranty and a 12-month or 12,000-mile Bumper-to-Bumper Warranty to keep your truck covered after your purchase. Two scheduled maintenance visits are included with the Scheduled Maintenance Program, which gives buyers free services like oil and filter changes, multi-point inspections, and tire rotations as part of the services covered. Buyers also get a free three-month trial for OnStar and SiriusXM, plus a GMC-backed return policy if you aren’t completely satisfied.

CPO Features by Model Year

If you choose to buy a CPO, you may be able to discover trucks as new as 2021 models, though they can range as far back as 2016. Rest assured, every model year is covered by the same warranty and must fall into the same parameters for mileage. Every GMC truck is subjected to the same inspection and reconditioning process in order to qualify, so whether you find a 2021 or a 2016 model, you can trust they are all in top condition as CPO vehicles. What can you expect to discover with a CPO? Anything from the entry-level to the most luxurious Denali trim could be included in the Certified Pre-Owned program. Keep in mind that every model year has numerous options for cab and bed sizes as well as engines, packages, and special editions that could be added to any trim level.

For 2021 models, six trim levels are available, including the off-road AT4 and the range-topping Denali. GMC can claim best-in-class features for this model year with the most head and legroom for the crew cab style, plus having the largest volume of any truck bed in the segment. Look for the GMC signature LED daytime running lights, the available MultiPro Tailgate, and up to 15 available camera views that assist with trailering and driving duties. Powerful engine choices include a pair of V8s and a diesel option, as well as towing capability for the turbocharged inline-four increasing by 2,600 pounds. Exceptional features like Adaptive Ride Control, the CarbonPro bed liner, and a 15-inch head-up display can be found in upper trims.

Moving back in model years to 2020, the GMC Sierra 1500 offered a generous max towing capacity of 12,100 pounds and a choice of four engines under the hood. The standard engine for 2020 was the 4.3-liter V6, and the diesel engine was also available for savings at the pump. Adaptive Cruise Control became available for the Sierra 1500 for the first time, and the CarbonPro bed liner was made available across more trim levels. At entry-level, the Sierra 1500 came standard with a seven-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and WiFi, with options for wireless charging, trailering tech, and a larger eight-inch screen in the center stack.

GMC redesigned the Sierra 1500 in 2019; the first year buyers saw the ingenious MultiPro Tailgate as part of the available features list. In this model year, six engine options were found in the lineup, with a max towing capability of 12,100 pounds. The new foundation for the Sierra 1500 made the truck lighter, and the redesign lengthened the Sierra, which gave more room to the interior of the cab. An updated exterior style cuts a more impressive figure for the Sierra 1500, and the new trailering features introduced for this model year include a number of technologies to improve sightlines and hitching, among others. Class-leading features like 12 standard tie-downs and the rear corner steps built into the bumper are part of what buyers can expect to find for this model year.

Prior to the redesign, the 2018 Sierra 1500 still remains a class leader in premium features, particularly with the exceptional Denali line, but also with the best maximum towing capacity for the segment that year with up to 12,500 pounds. Expect to discover available features like the Adaptive Air Ride suspension, ventilated front seats, and available driver-assist tech in upper trims. For the AT4 package, buyers will find Rancho shocks, skid plates, and standard four-wheel drive included in the features list, while standard features like the seven-inch touchscreen, rearview camera, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are found on all 2018 models.

Now going back to 2017, new features like Teen Driver, available tri-mode powered assist steps, and a capless fuel filler were included in the model year’s offerings. For all models, features like the CornerStep in the bumper, powerful HID projector-beam headlights, and USB ports are standard across the trims. Three engine choices were available, starting with the standard 4.3-liter V6, while the max towing capacity holds to the same number as the 2018 model year. With the uppermost Denali trim, buyers can expect features like Magnetic Ride Control for extra damping, a Bose sound system, and built-in navigation. The AT4X package included Hill Descent Control, LED fog lights, and a transfer case for the standard four-wheel drive.

Finally, the 2016 model year boasted the most capable V8 in the light-duty truck segment, which had a max towing rating of 12,000 pounds. In this year, three engine choices continued to be available, though all were gas-powered. Standard features such as the seven-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, and cruise control are found in entry-level trims, and upper trims could be found with dual-zone climate control, leather seats, and driver-assist features like lane-keep assist. The standard four tie-downs in the bed and CornerStep bed access are available across the lineup for 2016.
