A few years back, Buick decided to focus all of its efforts on building some of the finest and most affordable luxury SUVs on the market. To that end, the company shifted its focus to three models: the Encore small SUV, Envision compact SUV, and Enclave midsize SUV. Buick has been updating each model, and the latest one to get a new look is the 2022 Buick Enclave. This is the mid-cycle refresh of the second-generation Enclave, with the model first being introduced in 2008 before getting redesigned in time for the 2018 model year. Since that time, this three-row, midsize SUV has become the flagship model of the Buick lineup and helped to define the concept of a premium SUV.
The first thing you are sure to notice about the 2022 Buick Enclave is the SUV’s sleek and sporty lines. It starts with a front fascia and grille that is stylish yet aggressive, with a sloping hood to provide drivers with better visibility. It moves on to a sporty roofline that cants slightly to the rear, improving aerodynamics without taking away from interior headspace or cargo volume in the trunk. This look then finishes in the rear with a modern liftgate framed by a pair of bright and bold Evonik LED taillamps. In all, this new look will help the Enclave stand out from the crowded field of three-row, midsize SUVs.
Buick is offering the 2022 Buick Enclave in four trim levels, each offering another level of luxury. It starts with the Preferred, which will get you behind the wheel of an exceptional midsize SUV with premium styling at an affordable price. The next level is the Essence, followed by the Premium. The top trim is the Avenir, which represents the highest expression of refinement in a midsize SUV since it was added to the Enclave lineup back in 2017.
The 2022 Enclave Avenir offers an unbelievable assortment of luxury features that are unique to this trim level. On the exterior, you will get a specialized grille and wheels, as well as Avenir badging on the liftgate. Buick then carries this specialized styling to Avenir’s interior, with wood trim appliques, sewn patterns with piping on the quilted leather seats, and a chrome cargo sill plate in the trunk. The Avenir’s seats are heated and ventilated, with massaging seats in the front row. Buick completes the Enclave Avenir’s package with its available Continuous Damping Control active suspension system to give you the smoothest ride possible in your 2022 Buick Enclave.
All trims of the 2022 Buick Enclave are powered by a standard 3.6-liter V6 gas engine. The engine has a double overhead camshaft configuration for its 24 valves on an all-aluminum engine block and head, utilizing direct fuel injection to improve performance and efficiency. This V6 engine can produce 310 horsepower and generate 266 pound-feet of torque. This emphasis on horsepower will give you greater acceleration than in the prior generation of this model.
Buick has paired the Enclave’s 3.6-liter V6 engine with a 9-speed automatic transmission. In addition to giving you the benefits of greater fuel efficiency, this transmission also features a manual-shifting mode through a new electronic transmission range select controller, so you can get greater control over the engine’s performance.
This all-new Enclave features one very peppy engine. You should be able to go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in just 6.6 seconds in the 2022 Buick Enclave. With a top speed of 131 miles per hour, you should have little problem getting your Enclave up to cruising speed. More importantly for a family SUV, the Enclave Enclave can tow up to 5,000 pounds when equipped with a proper hitch.
Front-wheel drive is standard on the Enclave. However, if you would like a little more traction, then you can choose to equip your 2022 Enclave with the available all-wheel drive system. While this will produce a slight reduction in overall fuel economy, it will be beneficial if you live in an area with inclement weather. Also, it will provide you with a slightly smoother ride.
The EPA has estimated that the 2022 Buick Enclave with front-wheel drive will give you 18 miles per gallon in city driving, 26 miles per gallon on the highway, and a combined 21 miles per gallon. The numbers will be slightly lower if you opt for the available all-wheel drive system, coming in at 20 miles per gallon combined.
While the 2022 Buick Enclave has been designed for luxury, Buick has made sure to make safety standard on every model of this midsize SUV. It starts with a variety of driver-assist features, such as a following distance indicator and automatic emergency braking. In addition, the IntelliBeam auto high beams will automatically turn the high beam headlights on and off when you enter an especially dark part of the road late at night. This is all part of the Buick Driver Confidence Plus package of active safety features on the Enclave.
Some of the system’s features are designed to either reduce the impact of a crash or help you avoid one altogether through the use of the Enclave’s brakes. Automatic emergency braking will engage if the system detects an imminent front-end collision. Similarly, front pedestrian braking will automatically engage the Enclave’s brakes at lower speeds if the system’s cameras spot a pedestrian in front of you.
The system’s cameras will also help you drive more safely on the road. Forward collision alert will warn you if the system thinks you are following too closely behind the vehicle in front of you. The alarm will continue to sound until the system detects that you have sufficient stopping distance. The following distance indicator works in a similar fashion, letting you know how much space is between you and the car in front of you. This also comes into play when you are changing lanes.
Lane keep assist with lane departure warning will alert you if you cross over a line on the road without signaling. By sounding a warning, this feature will make sure you don’t drift when driving. If you do signal, then lane change alert with side blind zone alert will make sure that you do so as safely as possible. This feature will let you know if there is another vehicle in the other lane, so you can avoid a collision when changing lanes.
The Enclave’s safety system doesn’t only help when you are moving forward. Rear cross traffic alert will let you know if there are any other vehicles or pedestrians crossing behind your Enclave when you are backing up. This is a real benefit when you are in a crowded parking lot. The Enclave Premium and Avenir models also feature a rear pedestrian alert system that is designed to detect pedestrians when your Enclave is in reverse. This is available as an optional feature on the 2022 Enclave Essence model as well.
Buick has made parallel parking easier than ever on the Enclave. Rear park assist and front park assist are now offered on all 2022 Enclave trims, so you will have little trouble getting your SUV into and out of the tightest parallel parking spots. There is also an available rear camera mirror with surround vision, which makes tracking what is behind you easier than ever.
The 2022 Buick Enclave is a three-row midsize SUV that provides plenty of space for up to 7 passengers. While many other three-row SUVs do not provide much space for their third-row passengers, the designers at Buick have done an exceptional job apportioning the Enclave’s generous passenger space among the three rows. As a result, all of your passengers will enjoy the spacious interior of your 2022 Enclave, no matter where the road may take you.
One of the problems many drivers have with the class of luxury three-row SUVs is that the trunk is often little more than an afterthought. Many models in this segment focus solely on the passenger compartment, leaving you with a barely usable trunk unless you fold down at least one row of rear seats. This is not the case with the 2022 Buick Enclave. The liftgate opens up to reveal a full 23.6 cubic feet of space for your belongings, so you don’t have to shift any seats around after you have gone shopping. Nevertheless, if you do need more space, folding down the third row of seats will free up a total of 58 cubic feet of space. On those odd occasions when you have to move very large objects, the 2022 Enclave is up to the task, with a full 97.6 cubic feet of cargo space behind the front row of seats.
