Light-duty trucks are all well and good for the occasional weekend home improvement project or camping trip, but if you have big jobs that need doing or a large trailer or boat you want to bring along for the ride, it might be time to start looking for a heavy-duty model. Heavy-duty trucks come with more power than their light-duty counterparts, so they can tackle bigger projects that require superior payload and towing capacities. Once you've decided that you're in the market for an HD truck, it's time to move on to the next question: which one is right for you? Plenty of automakers offer beefier versions of their full-size trucks, so there's no shortage of options.
Today we're going to put two heavy hitters head to head: the 2023 GMC Sierra 2500 HD vs 2023 Ford F-250. Ford's F-series trucks are plenty popular, but that doesn't mean they're the best option you can buy. The Sierra HD has a lot to love, from tough construction to versatile utility to refined style. Let's take a look at how these two workhorses compare and see which one comes out on top.
New for the 2023 model year, the Ford F-250 has a solid appearance, with a refreshed grille and Ford's signature C-clamp headlamps. Of course, as a heavy-duty truck, it stands tall and has a nice, wide stance, projecting power and capability. Ground clearance varies a little from trim to trim, giving you 9.2 to 10.2 inches if you don't opt for the available off-road Tremor Package.
The GMC Sierra HD's bold grille, sharp style, and chrome accents help it find a unique balance between classy and strong. It pulls off this combination nicely, making it appealing to a wide range of drivers. It's about an inch taller and wider than the F-250, giving it an even more commanding presence. Some of that height gives it extra ground clearance, with the Sierra 2500 HD consistently coming in at a little over ten inches for on-road models. That means you'll have an easier time rolling right over uneven surfaces and rocks, branches, or other debris that might get in your way on country backroads.
When it comes to the cargo bed, the Sierra 2500 HD offers larger dimensions once again. The Sierra HD's standard box is nearly four inches wider than F-250's standard box and is a bit wider too. Add those inches up, and the F-250 gives you 65.4 cu.ft. of cargo space, while you can get 69.6 cu.ft. of cargo space if you opt for the Sierra HD. The difference is even bigger on the longer boxes: Ford's long box gets you 78.5 cu.ft. while GMC's long box provides 83.5 cu.ft. That's a full five cu.ft. of extra cargo space that you get if you choose the Sierra 2500 HD, which can make all the difference when it comes time to load your equipment, whether you're headed out to a big job, a big game, or a big camping trip.
A truck's tailgate is more than just a place to gather with friends outside a football game. It's an important element of any pickup's design. The tailgate is how you access your cargo in the bed, but with a little innovation, it can do so much more, adding incredible versatility to your heavy-duty truck.
The 2023 F-250 offers a few useful tailgate features. Like many other modern trucks, it has an available power tailgate so that you can open and close it at the push of a button. New for this model year is an additional backup camera that works when the tailgate is down, which can be helpful when reversing on the job site. But as far as the physical tailgate goes, it's just a single piece that goes up and down just like any other pickup.
With GMC's MultiPro Tailgate, you have a multi-tool at your disposal that can help you with loading, unloading, and more. This feature comes standard on the Denali, AT4, SLT, and SLE trims and is available on the base-level Pro. The combination of a primary gate and an inner gate that can be moved independently gives you six different functions:
The 2023 Ford F-250 and the 2023 GMC Sierra 2500 HD have excellent interior features, especially if you opt for higher-level trims. It's great to be able to relax in a cabin that's loaded with niceties like heated and ventilated seats, a premium audio system for blasting your favorite tunes, and a power-adjustable driver's seat that's easy to get just right for long hauls across the interstate. Both trucks also offer premium materials on upper trims, including leather-appointed seats, so you can make your truck as classy on the inside as it is tough on the outside.
The 2023 Ford F-250 has some optional features designed for resting while you're parked, like front seats that can fold almost all the way flat for a nap. Of course, the Sierra 2500 HD has some unique tricks up its sleeve as well. For instance, there are multiple available storage solutions, including under-seat storage and rear-seatback storage, so you can easily tuck all your belongings away and not have to deal with an uncomfortably cluttered cabin. A spacious center console features lighting for easy access at night and plenty of space for anything that you want to keep close at hand while you're on the road.
An important factor to consider when getting comfortable in a truck's cabin is how much space there is to stretch out and relax. Both the Sierra 2500 HD and the Ford F-250 are offered with three different cab sizes: the regular cab, which has only one row of seating and can accommodate up to three people, the double cab, which adds a back row bringing the seating capacity up to six, and the crew cab, which still seats up to six people but gives each person a little more room. However, whichever size you go with, you'll find that the Sierra HD's front row offers more headroom and legroom, allowing even the tallest drivers and passengers to get comfortable on longer drives.
