But in recent years, Ram's supremacy in the power game has been challenged by its peers, including the GMC Sierra 1500. While both trucks come with multiple powertrains, the 2023 Ram 1500 actually has fewer options than the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500, as well as less overall power and torque than GMC's luxury-oriented half-ton.
The 2023 Ram 1500 features three powertrains. The base engine is a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 with eTorque, which makes 305 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque. It's attached to an eight-speed automatic transmission, as are the rest of the powertrains. The Pentastar manages a max towing capacity of 7,730 lbs. The available 5.7-liter HEMI V8 with eTorque makes 395 hp and 410 lb-ft of torque. With the HEMI, you can achieve a maximum towing capacity of 12,750 lbs. Finally, there is the 3.0-liter Ecodiesel V6, which produces 260 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque, and has a maximum towing capacity of 9,600 lbs.
While the 2023 Ram 1500's three powertrain options are impressive, they all come up short in some capacity compared to the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500's options. Four engines are available for the Sierra 1500 spread across its trim lineup. The base engine is a 2.7-liter Turbo High-Output, which makes 310 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque. The 2.7-liter is attached to an eight-speed automatic transmission and can achieve a max tow rating of 9,400 lbs.
A 5.3-liter EcoTec3 V8 is next in line and manages 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque. The 5.3-liter V8 is matched to a 10-speed automatic transmission and has a maximum towing capacity of 11,200 lbs. Next is a 6.2-liter EcoTec3 V8, which manages 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. The 6.2-liter V8 has a maximum towing capacity of 13,000 lbs. Finally, there is a 3.0-liter Duramax inline-six turbo-diesel, which is also paired up with a 10-speed automatic transmission. The Duramax delivers 305 hp and 495 lb-ft of torque and has a maximum towing capacity of 13,000 lbs.
Basically, you get more torque and horsepower with the GMC Duramax compared to the Ram EcoDiesel. Not only that, the GMC 6.2-liter V8 offers more horsepower and torque than the Ram HEMI V8. The same applies to the base 2.7-liter Turbo for the Sierra compared to the base Pentastar on the Ram. Overall you just get more power, more torque, and higher tow ratings with the Sierra 1500.
