If you're looking for a highly capable pickup truck, then there's a good chance you're considering comparing the 2023 GMC Canyon vs 2023 Ford Ranger. Both are excellent options, built by brands known for their muscular and hardworking pickups that can handle some serious work on paved roads and in off-road environments. These two models fall in the midsize truck category, meaning they can accomplish some impressive towing and hauling but still have dimensions that make the trucks easy enough to maneuver. This makes either of these options a versatile choice that is ready to take that boat to the lake or handle some city driving.

Choosing which pickup to get can be a difficult decision. Making sure you have the right capabilities that are up for the challenges you're going to throw at them matters. Many pickup drivers know the misery of choosing a truck that can't quite keep up with their towing and hauling needs, and slows down when pushed to its limits. Plus, there are now so many modern features to consider, from driver-assist tech to infotainment, that make all the difference in your day-to-day life.

How does the 2023 GMC Canyon hold up against the 2023 Ford Ranger? We took a deep dive into each one and found that the redesigned 2023 Canyon is the more capable and modern choice. If you need higher towing capabilities out of your midsize truck and a bit more driver-centric technology, the GMC Canyon is the way to go. However, they were both great contenders. Here's a look at the details.

  • Performance

    Work and Adventure

Drivers ask for a lot out of their pickups. These are the vehicles you use to haul materials and tow equipment around work sites and the trucks you depend on to get your RV out to the campsite. They do much more than regular cars, so they need far more capability. The 2023 GMC Canyon does not disappoint. First off, it enjoys a powerful 2.7-liter turbo high-output engine to keep up when you utilize its generous 7,700-lb towing capability. You won't feel this pickup struggling when you put it to work, thanks to an impressive 430 lb-ft of torque and 310 hp.

This year's model also boasts an extra-wide and high stance that makes it feel balanced and stable, ready to crawl over obstacles in off-road environments. The redesigned Colorado also has an all-new AT4X trim, which boasts locking differentials and more. There are even beadlock-capable wheels that hold the bead of the tire more securely––that's ideal on rough roads. The AT4X Edition 1 package offers an off-road front bumper with a safari bar, front and rear underbody cameras, and reconfigurable bed rails for stashing your adventure gear.

The 2023 Ford Ranger comes close to matching the GMC Canyon in capability, but it falls a little short. Its towing capacity maxes out at 7,500 lbs––some 200 lbs less than the Canyon. Part of this is due to Ford's smaller 2.3-liter engine, which kicks out significantly less torque and horsepower. As far as off-road performance goes, the 2023 Ford Ranger also falls behind. It has three off-road packages that range from mostly stylistic upgrades up to the Tremor Package, which has a heavy-duty bumper and tow hooks. However, it lacks the ground clearance and traction of the Canyon AT4X. All in all, both trucks are good off-road options. However, if you need something that will go beyond "good," it'll have to be the GMC Canyon.

  • Infotainment

    Technology You Deserve

Today, drivers have come to expect a certain level of technology out of their vehicles––including their pickups. Some could argue pickup trucks need this more than other cars because their drivers sometimes spend all day in the cab of these beasts at a work site or towing equipment from one place to another.

The 2023 GMC Canyon stands out from its competitors with an upgraded cabin that is stunning, modern, luxurious, and incredibly user-friendly. Right away, drivers will notice the massive 11.3-inch diagonal center touchscreen, where you'll find everything from your smartphone apps to navigation to vehicle information displayed beautifully. Plus, if you don't want to take your eyes off the road to see pertinent data, an available 6.3-inch head-up display puts that information right in your line of vision. The 2023 GMC Canyon also enjoys Google built-in, which is a perk for those who like to use Google Assistant to get weather information, navigation instructions, and more.

The new Canyon also has a fun off-road performance display that shows information about your vehicle's systems in off-road environments. The available underbody cameras are fully waterproof, so you can rest assured you'll still get a look at what's happening under your truck, even when you go over puddles and streams.

    Ford Falls Behind

Ford's infotainment is solid but lacks a wow factor. The 2023 Ranger has an eight-inch touchscreen, which is underwhelming compared to the 11.3-inch display in the GMC Canyon. As for other features like connectivity and entertainment, the Ranger has Ford's available SYNC 3 system, which includes in-car navigation, climate controls, smartphone compatibility, and a simple design. You can opt for an available 4G Wi-Fi network that can connect up to 10 devices at once. The Ford Ranger's infotainment system is serviceable but doesn't quite keep up with the demands of modern drivers like the Canyon's does.

  • Driver-Assist Features

A black 2023 GMC Canyon is shown from the rear during a 2023 GMC Canyon vs 2023 Ford Ranger comparison.

    Reducing Accidents

Driver-assist features are arguably some of the most important innovations in the world of cars in the past decade. They greatly help reduce the chances of accidents and can minimize the severity of damage in the event of an accident. These features are especially important on a pickup truck because pickups have large bodies and are trickier to handle than sedans and small cars. Pickup truck drivers simply need extra assistance monitoring and managing their vehicles. This is true for even the best of drivers.

Both the 2023 GMC Canyon and the 2023 Ford Ranger do well in the driver-assist category. The GMC Canyon enjoys tons of standard-driver assist features, such as Automatic Emergency Braking that will take over when a collision is impending. It also has IntelliBeam auto high beams, which automatically turn on and off in low light settings, adjusting for oncoming traffic. Lane Keep Assist and Blind Zone Steering Assist help keep you in your lane and aware of others in your blind spot when changing lanes. Adaptive Cruise Control lets you set the distance you'd like to keep between yourself and the cars in front of you and adjusts speed automatically to match. Finally, Rear Cross Traffic Braking can automatically stop your vehicle when you're backing up, and another vehicle is detected.

The 2023 Ford Ranger has many of the same driver-assist features as the 2023 GMC Canyon. Drivers can feel confident that they will remain in the know about impending hazards in either of these vehicles. They can also rest assured that both trucks act as a competent second set of eyes and ears, making it easier to know what's happening around these trucks, even when you're towing or trailering. However, the Ranger does not have the 10 camera views that the GMC does or a few other new driver-assist features.
