We find ourselves with an ever-growing need for larger vehicles, capable of accommodating not only more passengers, but more gear as well. Gone are the days where the minivan was the only option for families. As more capable and cavernous SUVs continue to take over, it just makes sense that families are ditching the van, opting for stylish SUVs instead. Two options that are ideal for those seeking out large family vehicles are the GMC Yukon and the Ford Expedition, both offering plenty of room inside to handle more while also delivering a powerful performance. When comparing the 2022 GMC Yukon vs 2022 Ford Expedition, both full-size SUVs bring a lot to the table, and both have been around long enough to know exactly what drivers want.
The Yukon made its debut in 1991 when sedans still dominated the industry. Backed by an assertiveness and level of luxury that couldn't be beat, the Yukon quickly became the "it" vehicle for many types of drivers. From its upscale elegance inside and out to its bold stance and no-nonsense demeanor, the Yukon exhibited the right amount of class and capabilities, which is why it continues to be a top option to this day. The Expedition got its start a few years later in 1997, built with many F-150 attributes throughout, including very similar exterior appearances, as well as engines, suspension systems, and more. Although both SUVs have been available for decades, there's one that outperforms the other in the areas of interior design, performance, and tech.
If you're looking at vehicles like the Yukon and Expedition, chances are space is at the top of your list, which is exactly what you'll find in the 2022 GMC Yukon. Offering 122.9 cu.ft. of cargo space (144.7 cu.ft. in the larger XL model), as well as a best-in-class power-sliding center console to create even more room inside its expansive cabin, the Yukon is ready for anything your travels entail. In addition to all of this space, you'll also find that configurable options, like second-row fold-flat seats, available third-row power-folding seats, and more, are at the ready to help design the interior that works for you. The second row even slides to allow for a more comfortable entry into the rear of the vehicle, which is perfect for those loading up to full capacity for a weekend adventure on the road.
The 2022 Ford Expedition also showcases a large interior to handle more people and gear but doesn't quite match the Yukon, offering 104.6 cu.ft. of cargo space. You can upgrade to the larger MAX version for 121.5 cu.ft., but that still falls short of the Yukon XL. You'll find that the Expedition comfortably seats eight and features a standard Cargo Management System, similar to the configurable seating found in the Yukon. All in all, the Expedition offers a roomy, comfortable ride, but if you're looking for maximum space, the Yukon delivers more.
It's pretty difficult to compete with GMC when it comes to style because its vehicles are among the most ravishing around. With your choice of trim levels, including the ultra-elegant Denali and the adventure-ready AT4, discovering the Yukon that makes your travels better is easy. Available features, like heated and ventilated front seats and heated second-row outboard seats, allow for maximum comfort, no matter where you're going, and with a panoramic sunroof, letting the light in or enjoying the stars above is made possible with just a touch of a button. All of these features and more add not only intense luxury to this already refined SUV, but also offer extreme functionality, making the Yukon perfect for drivers searching for practicality and style.
The Ford Expedition features a pleasant interior, but of course, it's tough to come close to the sophistication you'll find in the Yukon. Its dash still features outdated buttons and knobs, and if you want to enjoy top-level luxury, you'll need to upgrade to top-level trims. Base trims will offer cheaper materials, while higher-level trims, like the Platinum, will showcase leather upholstery and more bells and whistles, including massaging seats, captain's chairs, and more. All in all, both full-size SUVs offer many features to their occupants, but with more cargo volume available and more high-end style, the 2022 GMC Yukon is our winner when it comes to interior design.
The 2022 GMC Yukon exhibits a boldness that can't be denied, with three engines to choose from to deliver a powerful performance. Its 6.2L V8 showcases maximum power, with 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque to give it the strength it needs to be able to tow up to 8,200 lbs. Opt for its Duramax 3.0L Turbo-Diesel for unbeatable range, as it allows the Yukon to travel up to 648 miles on a single tank in the standard Yukon, or 756 miles in the XL version, making it ideal for long trips with your family or frequent travels for work.
Perhaps what makes the Yukon so exceptional is its unbelievable ride quality, with a smoothness that can't be ignored, made possible by its first-in-class Four-Corner Air Ride Adaptive Suspension. With the ability to raise the Yukon up to two inches for optimal ground clearance, the Yukon's advanced suspension system is unlike anything you've experienced before. Pair this with a Traction Select System, and you'll be able to enjoy a controlled and responsive ride, no matter what type of road condition you find yourself on next. You'll also find Magnetic Ride Control, which comes standard on the AT4 and Denali models, allowing for even more agility on any type of roadway, adjusting to changes in road conditions almost instantly to provide the most comfortable ride possible.
The Expedition is also armed with various engines to choose from, but it doesn't offer quite as much of a selection as you'll find with the Yukon. Its turbocharged 3.5L EcoBoost V6 delivers nice power to the Expedition, with a standard 380 horsepower and a solid towing capacity. Where this full-size SUV falls short, however, is with its overall ride quality, as many drivers report that it's not quite as comfortable as others in its class and tends to be a bit noisy on the highway. Lacking responsiveness in such a cumbersome vehicle can prove to be problematic, especially if you're towing your camper into the woods for a weekend adventure. For those who are craving adventure, we advise upgrading to the Timberline model to enjoy better control and handling through Trail Control technology, which includes Trail Turn Assist, Hill Descent Control, and other helpful features designed for the trails.
Through features like its enhanced suspension system, as well as Hill Start and Hill Descent technology and an available Active Response 4WD System, the Yukon delivers more performance-enhancing elements to your journey. Unfortunately for the Expedition, its loud ride and lackluster driving dynamics make it easy to pass up in favor of the Yukon for virtually any type of adventure.
Technology plays a large role in our vehicles, and the 2022 GMC Yukon showcases some of the most impressive in the industry. Offering up to 13 camera views, plus High-Definition Surround Vision, you're able to see more clearly from all angles around your vehicle, making everyday tasks, like parking, backing up, and navigating through traffic easier than ever. Its class-leading 15-inch Diagonal Head-Up Display places pertinent information right at eye-level, including ride details, speed, navigation, and much more. Its 12-inch Diagonal Driver Information Center is perhaps one of its most remarkable features, providing access to critical information in four configurable themes to make your experience truly one-of-a-kind.
The Expedition includes Ford's latest SYNC 4A system, which is showcased through a 12-inch or an available 15.5-inch touchscreen. The latter takes up a large amount of space on the dash, dominating most of the prime real estate inside, which may not appeal to every driver. The Expedition also includes a configurable instrument cluster and all of the infotainment staples you'd expect to find in a modern vehicle, including smartphone integration and more. All in all, the Expedition provides exactly what you'd expect to find in a vehicle and not much else.
We prefer the Yukon here, especially when you consider enhancements, like two available 12.6-inch LCD HD touchscreens in the back to entertain restless passengers. You can find many favorable tech features in the Expedition as well, but its overly large 15.5-inch touchscreen can be a little cumbersome and in the way.
