The completely redesigned 2021 Buick Envision is set to arrive in early 2021, and we could not be more excited to see what Buick has done with this already great luxury SUV. Known for its luxurious features, spacious interior, sleek and athletic look, as well as its performance, the Envision is one of the premier SUVs of any size on the market today. What’s even more impressive is that its stunning attributes are expected to only get better with the 2021 version. While this is good news, it isn’t all that surprising, especially for current Buick SUV owners who have come to expect nothing less but brilliant innovation and peppy performance from one of the top brands in the luxury niche. Still, it is worth putting the 2021 Envision side by side with the competition to see how it really stacks up. To do that, let's take a moment to examine the 2021 Buick Envision vs 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe.
Even though the definitive specs on both SUVs have yet to be released, there is still a lot we can predict. There are some things we do know for certain that allow us to get an idea of how these two SUVs compare to one another in some of the most important categories like safety, performance, style, and fuel economy.
Performance is another area where we do know some information for certain, at least for the 2021 Buick Envision. In the same announcement that touted the Envision’s long list of advanced safety features, Buick revealed the exciting engine that will power this luxury machine.
Under the hood, the 2021 Buick Envision will have a 2.0L 4-cylinder turbo engine that runs with a nine-speed automatic transmission and will be capable of generating 230 horsepower. The 2020 Envision already had a standard spunky engine, a 2.5L 4-cylinder that produced 197 horsepower so the extra power will be even more thrilling.
The 2020 Santa Fe is powered by a 2.4L 4-cylinder that generates noticeably less horsepower at 185 hp. For 2021 it is expected that a turbocharged option will be available as well, though even if that is the case, it will be on par with the Buick Envision at 235 hp.
One of the things about the 2020 Buick Envision that makes it such a compelling SUV is that it boasts an impressive list of standard safety features. Many of the latest and greatest technological innovations that have made SUVs some of the safest vehicles on the road often come on the higher trims of SUVs, both luxury and otherwise. But that is not the way Buick has done things with the Envision, and it is expected that it will again be the case with the 2021 Envision. In fact, its long list of standard safety features is one part of the Envision Buick has already made an announcement on.
For the 2021 Buick Envision, the list of standard safety features is nearly comprehensive. For starters, Automatic Emergency Braking and Front Pedestrian Braking, two technologies that, in some cases, actually stop the car for you in order to avoid a collision, will come standard on all 2021 Envision trims. Forward Collision Alert will also be standard and complete the collision avoidance suite nicely.
In addition to the collision avoidance technologies, the 2021 Envision will also come standard with Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, which will both alert you if the Envision begins to drift into the adjacent lane and gently steer the vehicle back into the proper lane if the driver’s reaction warrants such an action. The Following Distance Indicator will also be welcomed and help keep you a safe distance from the car in front of you.
Finally, Rear Park Assist and the HD Rear Vision Camera will make parking a breeze and make sure you, other cars, and pedestrians around you are all safe.
All of these standard features are in addition to an even longer list of available safety features, which will make the 2021 Envision one of the safest vehicles on the road. Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert are just two of the features that will be available for the 2021 Envision.
Less is known about the 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe and exactly which safety features will be standard. While the 2020 version has a solid safety rating, it will be interesting to see if those same features carry over to all trims of the 2021 Santa Fe, or if they will be reserved only for the higher trims.
Another area of clear victory for the 2021 Buick Envision is in the less tangible category of style. On the inside and out, with the infotainment system and elsewhere, the 2021 Envision looks and feels like the luxury SUV that it is, while the Santa Fe gives off more of a discount aura.
In fact, Helen Emsley, the executive director of Global Buick and GMC Design, said, “The 2021 Envision will be lower and wider, with premium proportions and striking styling designed to combine the expressiveness of a car with the practicality of an SUV.”
The contoured lines and energetic look of the exterior will be unmatched in the luxury SUV category. What’s more, is that when it comes to the interior, the layout, generous leg and cargo room, and intuitive infotainment system replete with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (and run through a massive 10” touchscreen), every single feature exudes a stylish, luxurious feel you just don’t get with many other brands.
With the 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe and the entire lineup of Hyundai, SUVs aren’t known for their attention to aesthetics and design. To be fair, Hyundai doesn’t pretend to be a luxury brand, and when it comes to style and feel, it doesn’t really try to compete with Buick.
One other category where the 2021 Buick Envision is sure to be an exceptional vehicle is when it comes to interior tech features. The 2021 Envision is set to be stocked and includes many of the features drivers want.
At the top of the list is the brilliant and stunning 10” touch infotainment screen. The touch screen will make navigation, song selection, and other functions more intuitive and, in all reality, safer. While the 10” might not be available on all trims, even the 8” carryover touch screen will be stunning and get the job done.
Another key tech feature of the 2021 Envision is a head-up display (HUD). The HUD will show info such as speed limit, current speed, incoming calls, and more in an easy to see display on the windshield. While the HUD is ultra-convenient, it is also safer to keep your eyes on the road to see those numbers than looking around.
Finally, the 2021 Envision will make staying connected seamless with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Drivers have fallen in love with these two systems, and it is great to see Buick take advantage of them in the 2021 Envision.
The 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe is expected to have many of these same features.
