If you’re looking for a pickup that can do it all, then the full-size truck category is where you’ll want to begin your search. These trucks come with big engines, plenty of cargo space, and great towing and payload capacities. However, there are a lot of options to choose from in this ultra-competitive market, which means you’ll need to do your research to find the truck that’s going to suit your needs the best. Each truck manufacturer out there is fighting to have the edge over the other by adding on different features that can be both extremely useful and convenient. To break things down a little, let’s do a quick comparison of two of the most popular light-duty full-size pickups on the market, the 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 vs 2020 Chevy Silverado.
For those of you that aren’t as familiar with the pickup market, you might not know that the GMC Sierra 1500 and Chevy Silverado are basically cousins to each other and share many similar qualities and features across the board. General Motors, or GM, is the parent company to both GMC and Chevrolet, and that means a lot of vehicles from both divisions will come off the same assembly lines with nearly-identical features. Still, that doesn’t mean they end up being completely the same, as you’ll still find important differences here and there. In general, the GMC line of trucks is considered to have more premium features than its Chevy counterparts, and that ends up raising the overall value of the vehicle.
Still, you’re going to find a lot of similarities between the two lines of pickups. The 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 has a base starting MSRP of $31,195 while the 2020 Chevy Silverado starts off at $28,300. It’s very competitive pricing between the two, with the Silverado coming in below the Sierra. However, the amount is small enough that anyone wanting to look into a Sierra for their additional features won’t be thrown off by the difference in price.
One of the most important factors with any pickup, let alone a full-size version, is finding out what’s under the hood in terms of engine and performance. It’s also important to note what kinds of engines are available for each of the trucks you’re looking at. With increased engine options, including more powerful ones, you will generally see a big increase in capabilities as well. Next, there’s a 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 engine with up to 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque, paired with either a 6-speed, 8-speed, or 10-speed automatic transmission. For a more fuel-efficient ride, you might go with the 2.7L Turbo engine with up to 310 hp and 348 lb-ft of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission.
The most powerful of the available gas engines on the 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 is a 6.2L EcoTec3 V8 engine with up to 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. And last but not least, you have your diesel option in the form of a 3.0L Duramax Turbo-Diesel I6 engine with up to 277 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. With the diesel engine equipped, and in the proper configuration, you can get highway fuel economy numbers of up to 30 MPG. Not bad when you remember we’re talking about a full-size pickup.
Since Chevy and GMC vehicles share a lot of parts and features, you can expect the 2020 Chevy Silverado engine options to be much the same as the 2020 GMC Sierra 1500. In fact, they are the same exact engines, from the standard 4.3L EcoTec3 V6 to the 6.2L EcoTec3 V8, and even the 3.0L Duramax Turbo-Diesel I6.
Overall, these are some of the best engine options in the industry, and you’ll find them on both of these pickups.
A full-size pickup wouldn’t be much of a truck if there wasn’t sufficient room for cargo available both in the truck bed and the cab. This feature of trucks has become increasingly important to consumers as we want our vehicles to be able to do, handle, and carry more.

If that weren’t enough, the CarbonPro bed weighs 25 percent less than traditional steel beds.
In addition to the CarbonPro bed, the GMC Sierra is the first pickup in the world to introduce a six-function tailgate, called the GMC MultiPro Tailgate. This tailgate offers six different functions that allow for more versatility when loading and unloading gear, trying to access gear, needing a step to get into the bed, and much more. You can also add on the available MultiPro Audio System by Kicker, which is an exterior audio system that integrates with the MultiPro Tailgate. Now you can have some easy access to your favorite tunes are you’re putting in some work or getting ready for a tailgate party.
Interestingly, both pickups have a variety of interior storage solutions as well, including available rear-seatback storage compartments and available rear under-seat storage.
The technology and features you find within a pickup can really elevate the whole experience. These days, pickups aren’t just your everyday worker machines that they were a long time ago. Now, people want to have a bit of luxury and premium comfort to go along with their rough and ready full-size trucks. Fortunately, the manufacturers have listened and have also provided what we’re looking for.
Both the 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 and 2020 Chevy Silverado come with plenty of advanced and premium features that will completely transform the way you view pickup trucks. It’s no longer just about the work, but the ride as well, especially if your pickup is being used to bring along friends and/or family.
On both trucks you’ll find an available 15-inch diagonal Head-Up Display that gives the driver easy access to important information like vehicle speed, available navigation, and available active safety alerts. Since this information shows up in front of the driver, it’s easy to keep your eyes on the road while processing this information. You’ll also find each pickup has its own trailering system that allows for a wealth of information about your trailer to be easily accessed from in-vehicle or mobile applications. You can easily check on the status of your trailer, including from different camera views and angles.
Both pickups have the option for an available 4G LTE Wi-FI Hotspot, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, and available SiriusXM with 360L.
It’s easy to see that comparing the 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 vs 2020 Chevy Silverado can be difficult since they’re both such similar pickups, but at the end of the day, you can also tell that there are some significant differences between the two. While the Sierra may come off as slightly more expensive, it has unique features that you won’t find on the Silverado, including the MultiPro Tailgate, and all of its functionality, and the CarbonPro bed.
