Wrangler History

The history of the Jeep Wrangler is perhaps the most interesting out of 99% of currently available automobiles, but why is that? The Wrangler has an origin story that goes beyond itself – sharing DNA with one of history’s most recognizable automobiles. Come 1940, the Willys Quad was introduced to the world, but more recognizable was the Willy MB in 1941.

In the early to mid-1940s, the world was facing a lot of stress, and the United States needed vehicles that could help soldiers overseas. This was a time of turmoil that caused manufacturers to hastily build vehicles for their respective countries’ militaries, leaving no stone unturned. The United States Army put out the call for a "go anywhere, do anything" type of vehicle, and the Willy MB was born – assisting soldiers with transportation during one of history’s worst wars. Because it utilized 4x4, it allowed soldiers to cross tough terrains in times of emergency when there were no roads to travel on.

With an incredible amount of versatility combined with its recognition as an official US Army vehicle, Jeep knew it couldn’t let the technology rest after World War II. How could it lend this potential to others in the world? The answer was the Jeep CJ, which was a Willy MB at heart, but marketed towards civilians, hence the name ‘Civilian Jeep.’ The first ideology of the Jeep CJ was to make the lives of farmers easier, but the CJ would become the vehicle that defined Jeep’s prominence in the 20th century and would continue production until 1986.

Once the Jeep CJ ceased production, the Wrangler came into the scene to take its place. The Wrangler was the logical next step for the brand, and over thirty years later, the Wrangler continues to garner praise – even making the list of the best selling cars of 2020 by Car and Driver. The YJ shares many similarities with its CJ roots. The first-generation Wrangler looks more like the CJ-10, which was the last model of the CJ before the Wrangler was released, albeit this was a pickup truck. This is most evident by its rectangular headlamps, but ultimately, the Wrangler is known for the rounded headlamps found on later models – the same ones you’d find on the Willy MB all of those years ago.

For nine years, the Jeep Wrangler YJ was on the market until the TJ was released in 1996. The first immediate change was the return to the rounded headlamps, leaving the squared-off ones in the 1980s. The new Jeep TJ models boasted better performance and greater stability for off-roading. This generation is often regarded as one of the most popular Wrangler generations by a majority of its fanbase, primarily due to a large number of fans being drawn to the 4.0L V6 engine, which hasn’t been available since 2006.

This brings us directly to the JK, and these are plenty on the used market. There’s a strong chance you’ll find more JK than JL models when shopping on the used market, but this is because the JL generation hasn’t been around nearly as long yet. Speaking of the JL, it remains the most current Wrangler generation to date, and it’s exactly where Jeep and its fans want it to be, which is both performance and durable.

Popular Years for the Wrangler

There’s no shortage of Wrangler models to select from when you’re shopping for a used vehicle. However, there are a few key examples of where you should start looking. For example, the 2012 version of this pre-owned SUV is a fantastic place to start because the 3.6L V6 engine received a performance increase, which is identical to the amount of performance the base level V6 offers Wrangler drivers in the current day. As far as relevancy goes, the 2012 Wrangler performs admirably well, but with the age of the vehicle, you shouldn’t expect a modern-day set of entertainment and connectivity features, such as an infotainment center. The same could be said for the entirety of the JK line, however.

If modern-day amenities such as an infotainment center don’t interest you, and you’re looking for a genuine Wrangler experience, the 2006 model remains a strong option for drivers looking to encapsulate on the popular but long discontinued 4.0L V6 engine. But, if modern tech features are of interest to you, then the 2018 Wrangler, which was the first JL model, offers an available 8.4-inch infotainment center. Starting in 2021, smaller media centers were implemented into the base models, but it’s far less feature-packed than the available UConnect infotainment center.

Keeping Your Jeep Wrangler in Great Shape

Jeep Wranglers are some of the most rugged and hardest-working vehicles on the planet, able to take you anywhere you want to go and tackle anything you throw at it. The level of engineering that goes into making a Jeep Wrangler is exceptional, and that becomes evident the first moment you get behind the wheel and feel what it can do. With powerful engines, incredible suspension designs, and 4x4 systems that deliver unbelievable traction in even the most challenging conditions, a Wrangler is designed to go where other vehicles simply cannot. But taking your Wrangler out on the trail and getting the most from it takes its toll.

Driving a vehicle around town results in some natural wear and tear, but it is nothing compared to the kind of abuse that a Jeep Wrangler can put up with while out on the trail. We certainly love going off-road, but we also know that the realities of leaving civilization behind are rough on a vehicle. Even if you are careful and stick to trails that you and your Wrangler can handle with ease, simply driving on uneven dirt roads can beat up your suspension, wear your tires and brakes, and pump a lot of dust and dirt toward your engine. This is why you must properly maintain and service your Wrangler, so you can keep getting the most from it for many years.

Proper maintenance starts with following a set service schedule to get ahead of future problems; this is true for any vehicle, but it is even more important with an off-road-ready Jeep Wrangler. If you like to hit the trail as much as we do, then it is vital you stick to a more proactive service schedule than someone who goes through a simple daily commute or just enjoys their vehicle around town. Your engine works hard, your filters get dirty and clogged up faster, and your suspension deals with a lot more up-and-down than someone driving on the highway daily.

Fortunately, we here at Rick Hendrick Buick GMC Duluth are ready to provide you with fantastic service and maintenance for your Jeep Wrangler. Our certified service center and parts department have a tremendous amount of experience working on Wrangler models, so we know them inside and out. Whether you need routine service after a weekend out on the trail or you have started hearing a strange noise coming from under the hood, we can help. Our experts will get the work done quickly and properly, so you can get back out there in no time and keep enjoying everything your Wrangler has to offer.
