Buick History

While Buick may be a division of General Motors today, the luxury automaker is the reason GM came to fruition in the early 1900s. Buick is one of the oldest automotive nameplates in the world and the oldest in the United States, with its origins dating to 1899 when engineer Walter Marr with the Buick Auto-Vim and Power Company built two automobiles. At the time, the company’s owner, David Dunbar Buick, wasn’t thrilled with the idea of entering the automotive industry. Marr, however, knew the future was elsewhere and left Buick in 1901 to launch an automobile company of his own.

Buick temporarily replaced Marr with Eugene Richard, who patented Marr’s overhead-valve engine under the Buick name. In 1903, the third Buick vehicle was produced just as William C. Durant, future founder of General Motors, invested in the company and stepped in as General Manager. Rebranded the Buick Motor Company, Buick moved its operations to Flint, Michigan, where Durant rehired Marr to oversee production. That year, Buick produced 37 Model B Touring Cars that delivered between 15 and 21 horsepower. Within four years, Buick surpassed Cadillac and Ford as the top producer in America with 8,820 units made.

Having established its reputation for building affordable luxury vehicles, Buick built its one-millionth vehicle by 1923 and continued to expand its lineup to meet the growing demands of drivers. The 21-horsepower engine of the Model B Touring car was overshadowed by the 8-cylinder engine of the late 1930s before Buick lent its services to the war efforts to produce M18 Hellcat tank destroyers. Following the war, Buick returned larger than ever with sophisticated models like the Roadmaster Convertible, Riviera, Roadmaster Skylark Convertible, and Electra 225.

By the 1960s, Buick entered the performance segment with the Invicta and later extended the lineup with a variety of models like the Wildcat and the performance-focused Gran Sport GSX. The Buick Century set the pace for the Indy 500 in 1976, and American drivers got a turbocharged engine of their own two years later with the Turbo Regal Sport Coupe powered by a 3.8-liter turbo V6. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Buick continued to deliver high-performing vehicles like the Regal Grand National, but the automaker also showcased its sophisticated side with models like the Park Avenue before shifting its focus entirely to SUVs in the new millennium.

Benefits of a Used Buick

We’re convinced a used Buick will leave you dazzled. Why? You get all of the same features and luxury that every Buick is crafted with but at a more affordable price. A large portion of used Buick vehicles are as good as new, thanks to the care and inspection we put each of our used car inventory through. Many people wonder if they will still get the same level of quality in a used car. Well, we can speak for Buick, and the answer is a resounding yes. Buick vehicles are built with the highest level of quality that doesn’t break down after several years. With the dependability and longevity that you would expect from a luxury brand, you can be confident that Buick produces vehicles that will last.

A large amount of people in the market for luxury cars will often go for the used models because you get all of the amazing features and at a fraction of the luxury price tag. This is one of the great benefits of purchasing a used Buick. Selecting a recent previous model year SUV or sedan gives you a break in price, but not in luxury or performance. So, if you thought that luxury was out of your reach, think again and look at a used Buick for all the luxury you could want at a price you can actually afford.

Another important point to make in favor of purchasing a used Buick is you get a chance to purchase a Buick vehicle that is now discontinued. Recently Buick has moved to a lineup of vehicles that’s entirely SUVs or crossovers. That means if you’re on the hunt for a used Buick sedan or convertible, your only choice would be to purchase a used model. These are still exceptional vehicles, they have the awards to prove it, but you won’t see any new models coming from the factory any time soon. Now, if you're ready to find your ideal used Buick in Atlanta, our team is ready to give you exactly what you’re looking for.

Popular Used Buicks

Enclave

Buick got its start in the automotive industry producing luxury sedans, but as with any reputable brand, the automaker realized its customers wanted more. Buick needed to evolve, and that meant expanding into the SUV and minivan segment with models like the Rainier and Terraza. However, neither model was a huge hit for Buick, and that led engineers back to the drawing board to design a crossover that would offer plenty of spaciousness for growing families, exceptional power and handling, and the renowned luxury of the Buick brand. In 2008, the Enclave was born.

Replacing the Terraza and the Rainier, the Enclave had big shoes to fill and did so with widespread success. The first-generation Enclave offered seating for up to eight passengers, optional all-wheel drive for added capability, and a great balance of power and efficiency. These features made the Enclave a huge seller in its debut year and prompted Buick to make a few important upgrades for 2009 to deliver more power and better performance, additional convenience and luxury features, and a suite of innovative technology.

The Enclave got its first major facelift in 2013, and that meant a more modern design both inside and out with a new waterfall front grille, LED lighting, and high-quality interior materials. Buick also added its new infotainment system and a suite of safety features that gave drivers greater connectivity and safety on the road. These updates reinvigorated interest in the Enclave before Buick debuted the second-generation model in 2018.

Sleeker and more aerodynamic, the second-generation Enclave featured a lower roofline and a three-dimensional front grille. Buick added a new transmission option as well as an intelligent all-wheel-drive system that extended the Enclave’s capability on various terrain. Customers also saw the introduction of new premium trims like the Enclave Avenir that took the best-selling crossover to an entirely new level of luxury and performance with premium materials and effortless handling.

Encore

The success of the Enclave inspired Buick to design a smaller SUV, a complement to the Enclave that would deliver greater efficiency and maneuverability. The Encore debuted in 2013 and pioneered the crossover segment. It proved luxury, efficiency, power, and affordability could cohabitate in the automotive realm, at least in the Buick lineup.

The first-generation Encore offered the best fuel economy of any front-wheel-drive crossover in the United States and paired that efficiency with capability and responsive handling. Its elegant exterior matched that of the larger Enclave, just as the premium interior delivered the ultimate in luxury from high-quality cloth to leather seating and more. Its technology also proved to be cutting edge from the infotainment system to its suite of active and passive safety features designed to give drivers all the confidence needed behind the wheel.

By 2017, the Encore was celebrated as Buick’s best-selling vehicle with a facelift that made it even more elegant and sophisticated. The complete redesign stretched from its new exterior headlamps to the cockpit-inspired interior with its upgraded connectivity features and conveniences. Fast forward three years later and the Encore saw even more updates with the debut of its second-generation that ushered in new LED lighting, Buick’s exclusive QuietTuning and active noise canceling technology, smartphone integration, and driver-assist tools to actively minimize the potential for collision and deliver peace of mind at every turn.

Envision

With the Encore sitting on the small end of the crossover spectrum and the Enclave on the larger end, there was an obvious need to fill the gap between these two luxury SUVs in the Buick lineup. Buick filled that gap with the Envision, which was first introduced as a concept in 2011. The Envision made its debut in China in 2014 and, two years later, finally made its way to American roads.

The first-generation Envision promised to deliver everything you could want in a crossover, from premium interior details and exceptional performance to an array of technology. Fortunately for Buick, the Envision delivered big and boasted more cargo and passenger space than most of its competitors. The addition of standard conveniences like heated front and rear seats, a heated steering wheel, and tri-zone climate control added to the Envision’s popularity.

Shortly after its debut, the Envision saw its first facelift in 2018 with new rear styling and an updated powertrain. These changes satiated the Buick fans for several years as Buick returned to the drawing board to design the SUV’s second generation. Debuting in 2021, the second-generation Envision is sophisticated, sleek, and stunning from the inside out with its modern and luxurious design. The Envision’s updates range from new standard safety and driver-assist tools that serve as an extra set of eyes around the SUV to the latest connectivity features, smartphone integration, a hands-free power liftgate for added convenience, and one of the quietest and smoothest rides in the segment.
