  • Overview

A red 2020 GMC Canyon is facing left.

The 2019 GMC Canyon introduced lots of likable features that have kept truck fans in anxious anticipation of the latest 2020 model. Several engine upgrades are available if desired, with the option to customize your preferences based on fuel efficiency, high-tech safety features, cargo space, power, and starting price. The 2020 GMC Canyon starts at an MSRP of $29,100.

General Motors’ midsize pickup, the GMC Canyon, was first introduced in 2004. It offers both manual and automatic transmission, along with rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive options. Redesigns of the early model occurred in 2006, and again in 2009, to offer new exterior colors, engine configurations, and stylish design updates. It surpassed much of the competition in its early days, earning record sales in 2005.

For 2019, the GMC Canyon Crew Cab was highly rated on Kelley Blue Book with a 4.2/5 rating by the experts and a 4.6/5 from customers. Its combined fuel economy is listed at 20 miles per gallon, and it produces 200 horsepower. Unless you opt for the extended cab, the GMC Canyon can be viewed as a useful truck that’s still compact enough to fit in the garage. GMC’s new infotainment system with an improved user interface helped the Canyon to stay competitive in a market inundated with trucks. It’s now easier for drivers of the Canyon to connect with the Cloud and enjoy high tech features on several trim levels. A heated steering wheel, wireless phone charging, parking sensor, and an HD rearview camera are just some of the perks that 2019 brought to the table for a wider range of customers.

For parents with new drivers in the family, the Teen Driver feature offered by GMC helps parents stay in control. This safety feature, included in recent years of the GMC Canyon, allows parents to set speed limits, volume controls, and monitor driving habits from afar. The GMC Canyon is not only a vehicle that more seasoned drivers will love but also one that parents might be willing to let their sixteen-year-old borrow.

The GMC Canyon has perfected the delicate balance between comfort and style. Drivers and passengers sit high with great visibility for a midsize truck. Seats are wide and supportive for long rides and bigger passengers. GMC includes their special CornerStep to on either side of the rear bumper to make access to the cargo bed easy, no matter your height. A top-notch suspension system, quality brakes, and direct steering provide a drive that feels more like an SUV than a truck. For this model, Kelley Blue Book recommends the 3.6-liter V6 engine for great mileage, towing power, and acceleration ability.

Rear park assist is available in this model, and the HD rear vision camera is now included with standard to improve visibility. The Teen Driver feature is provided on all models to give parents peace of mind when letting their teen take their new truck out for a drive. Stabilitrak electronic stability control with traction control is included as standard as well to improve driving in less than ideal road conditions.

Four-wheel drive is also an option for drivers who prefer it over two-wheel drive. OnStar and GMC Connected Services are standard offerings in the 2020 Canyon. Lane Departure Warning and Forward Collision Alert are available as upgrades if desired. Overall, the safety features offered in the 2020 Canyon are on par with other trucks in its class. GMC provides generous offerings across trim levels, making high-tech features accessible for various price points.

  • Interior

All-weather floor liners, mats, and automatic climate controls are available but not standard for the SLE two-wheel drive. These can be purchased as accessories or added for a mark-up. The standard infotainment system in the 2020 Canyon is a 7-inch diagonal GMC infotainment system. A 4.2-inch diagonal color driver information center is displayed on the dashboard to keep drivers informed on the road for higher trims of the Canyon.

The 2020 Canyon is 4G LTE Wifi hotspot capable. It offers a six-speaker audio system as a nice standard feature. Drivers can choose to upgrade to a seven-speaker Bose audio system with higher trims like the SLE. Front legroom measures in at 45-inches and second-row legroom is 35.8-inches on this roomy mid-size truck. Interior colors are simple but classic. Choose from a Cocoa/Dune Interior or Jet Black.

  • Exterior Design

The EZ-lift and lower tailgate makes the 2020 GMC Canyon a user-friendly vehicle that keeps the driver’s comfort and convenience in mind. Fog lamps and daytime running lamps are standard exterior features offered on higher trims, along with a locking tailgate and a spotter mirror. Several optional features exist, including spray-on or drop-in bed liners, wheel locks, a keyless entry keypad, front and rear splash guards, and a set of four cargo tie-downs.

Standard exterior colors for 2020 include Dark Sky Metallic and Summit White. For a mark-up, drivers can opt for Cardinal Red, Quicksilver Metallic, Onyx Black, Marine Blue Metallic, Satin Steel Metallic, Red Quartz Tintcoat, Smokey Quartz Metallic, Blue Emerald Metallic or Carbon Black Metallic. This vehicle can be anything that you want it to be, with several handsome details to choose from.

The Crew Cab model provides 41.3 – 49.9 cubic feet of cargo volume. It’s available in two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive with a short (5.2 ft) or long bed (6.2 ft). The max payload ranges from 1,386 to 1,605 lbs (unless you opt for the diesel engine option, which offers additional towing capacity). Depending on your towing needs, weighing the cost and benefit of added power is up to the individual. Whether you’re looking for a family pick-up truck that drives like an SUV or a heavy-duty work truck, the Canyon can easily serve either purpose as long as it’s fitted correctly to your lifestyle.

  • Performance

No description of the 2020 GMC Canyon would be complete without mention of the infamous Duramax Turbo Diesel Engine. This powerful 2.8-liter four-cylinder engine produces an impressive 181 horsepower. Torque is bumped up to a whopping 369 lb-ft. In this model, the six-speed automatic transmission is still standard, but an eight-speed automatic is an option as well. The automatic locking rear differential is standard in this configuration.

With diesel, fuel economy on the highway is increased to 30 miles per gallon. If you have long trips planned with heavy cargo to carry, the diesel will ensure you get to your destination with no problems. This is the engine that gives you a full 7,700 lbs of max conventional trailering. As a standard disclaimer, GMC warns drivers to double-check the owner’s manual to factor in passenger weight, cargo, and accessories of your particular vehicle in order to ensure a safe tow.

There are two other engine offerings on the 2020 GMC Canyon. The first is a 2.5L 4-cylinder engine that offers 200 horsepower and up to 191 lb-ft of torque. This engine offering has fuel economy ratings of 22 MPG in the city and up to 26 MPG on the highway. The third engine offering is a powerful 3.6L V6 that offers drivers 308 horsepower and 275 lb-ft of torque. This engine gets about 18 MPG in the city and a great 25 MPG on the highway.
